Whereas the UK five-piece more or less roped their atmospheric mantras off to certain songs and only those songs, CS wisely disintegrate tracks'' borders and stretch the instrument across just about the entire album. For that, we get a less boxy, song-by-song feel and more of a prolonged, harmonious saga of crushing woe that would be more washed out and incomplete if not for Edith Mathot''s ever-present bow work and Sylvester Piyel''s (the spinner of the 7"''s violin web) occasional keyboard trappings. Without taking kudos away from the five main bodies of the group whose talent of bending rhythms into the shape of teardrops is obvious, I''m willing to admit my glassy-eyed fascination for one weepy neck-held gadget and say it''s the belly of this type of recording. It is the combination of what were originally 2 distinct 10" releases: Godzilla (1997) and Eatin'' Dust (1999). In 2018, Scott Hill (vocals/guitar) found the original tapes from the Godzilla recording sessions produced by Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age/Kyuss) and unearthed a secret that had been in his garage since 1996...The band had recorded 4 songs that had never been released. These extra songs are early versions of "Grendel, Snowman," "Strolling Astronomer" and "Urethane" (whose final versions appeared on 1997''s The Action Is Go) and a cover of Thin Lizzy''s "Jailbreak" (which is a different version than the one which was released on 7" in 1998). The songs line up perfectly with the original tracklist, which includes the band''s crowd pleasing cover of Blue Oyster Cult''s "Godzilla" and fan favourites "Eatin'' Dust" and "Mongoose" (which was featured in a Super Bowl commercial for Toyota and included in the TV series "Sons Of Anarchy" and the films "Boondock Saints II" and "The Hot Chick"). Last year, the band released a 2,000 unit limited edition of this new version in a triple 10" package. Due to the continuing demand after this version sold out, the band has issued a new version. This limited edition of 1,500 units neon green and white splatter double 12" gatefold package with 2 sided insert includes the previously unreleased tracks at 45 RPM for the heaviest audio possible. The remastered CD version of the album is still available. Ane Brun has announced details of AFTER THE GREAT STORM, the first of two new albums, with the second, HOW BEAUTY HOLDS THE HAND OF SORROW, following a month later. Released by Brun''s own Balloon Ranger Recordings on October 30, 2020, these represent her first original material since 2015 and will be available in CD, LP and digital formats. AFTER THE GREAT STORM finds Brun in questing mode, her crystal-clear, affecting voice haunted by electronic and analogue textures. The emotionally charged ''Don''t Run And Hide'' and ''Honey''s laidback, soulful grooves reflect Brun''s love of trip hop while acknowledging contemporary acts including SiR, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak and Solange, and ''Take Hold Of Me'' nods to The Knife''s ''Silent Shout''. Jennie Abrahamson and Linnea Olsson also guest on ''Crumbs'', before ''We Need A Mother'' closes the album in mournful but optimistic style. "Both albums deal with the bigger questions in life," says Brun, "but in 2020 these questions have become even bigger. Both tracks and featuring Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott (of the Sun Ra Arkestra). The album ends with a requiem for Hal Willner (R.I.P.) whose devotion to celebrating the weird and insane was like an insatiable thirst leading to deep introspection and joy in harmony and sonic dissidence. These compositions have all come from this place inside my bipolar, seroquil ridden mind. It is as much a tribute to the great composers who have inspired me; Alice Coltrane, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Philip Kelan Cohran, Bernard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, John Carpenter, Quincy Jones, Old Bollywood, Film Noir, to name just a few. In my 23 years of being a composer of music I have had the great opportunity to score several films all of which never got any commercial fame. These films were made from the blood and sweat of film directors and their crews who tirelessly made incredible documents that were ultimately ignored by humanity. But that never stopped them nor will it stop me. These tracks are from the infinite celluloid that runs deep in my mind, body and soul. In my lifetime i never thought i would see the deaths of "Celluloid" or "analog recording". I refuse to accept the coroner reports on said fatalities, so here is my offering to the canon of cinematic overtures and analog self-preservation, for the films in our heads yet to be made. The first result is the new solo album Galmandsværk due out November 10th which was conceived during a vacation on the small volcanic island Gomera near the coast of Marocco where he stayed in a small room doing nothing but writing new songs for 10 weeks. Uffe Lorenzen: "I was given the opportunity to travel for a few months last winter and decided to spend a lot of time looking at the ocean and writing songs in Danish. I think I have found my own method and perhaps even a more personal angle than before. I still think writing in Danish is a challenge, but I feel that the more honest expression deserves a more honest packaging, so the name Lorenzo Woodrose, which was really designed for people outside of Denmark to be able to pronounce my name when we started out, suddenly felt oddly superficial". Galmandsværk (loosely translates to "act of madness") contains 10 songs that goes in many directions and sounds as if Baby Woodrose, Spids Nogenhat and Dragontears merged and turned into something new. The sound of the album is mostly acoustic with many exotic instruments such as sitar, tablas, bansuri, hurdy gurdy, violin and of cource doses of fuzz. Uffe Lorenzen: "I think I have reached a point where I have to find new ways to do things to keep the process interesting and motivate myself. This time, writing in Danish was just one challenge out of many, as we also tried to keep instrumentation mostly to acoustic instruments and purposefully avoided the usual pitfalls by starting all tracks with a simple recording of vocal and guitar instead of rockdrums and guitarsolos. The whole album is recorded and mixed on tape which means no cut and paste and no use of pro-tools. Nonetheless, amidst such mental tumult Craig Clouse - the Austin-based sage of the aurally unclean also known as Shit & Shine - has been busily channelling the interface between the surroundings and his own wayward muse into ''Malibu Liquor Store'' - a lockdown-birthed psychic landscape mapped out in the first half of this turbulent year. The only expectation any relatively well-adjusted person should have of Shit & Shine remains the unexpected at this stage, with Clouse having released well over thirty records on multiple labels in a storied, questing and uniformly invigorating catalogue - just as comfortable with both bloody-minded electronic assaults and noiserock-driven dirge, as adept at kraut-hammered rhythmic mantras as dancefloor-friendly abstraction. ''Malibu Liquor Store'' is none of these things exactly yet simultaneously flirts cheerily and irreverently with all of them. Always shot through with gleeful humour, this is a sonic world that recognises neither boundaries nor common sense.
